Daniel Wang – Loose Vibes

Back on the blog after slacking off for a few weeks, and today we go from one of Jeff Mills’ most celebrated EPs to a little-known inside cut on a 1995 Daniel Wang 12”. The whole six-track Aphroasiatechnubian EP – the second proper release on his Balihu label – is pretty amazing, but Loose Vibes is a personal highlight, toning down the usual overtly vintage influences for a homage to the deepest Nu Groove-style New York house. It’s still firmly rooted in disco, but the stripped-back arrangement, raw drum machines and synth chords give it a timeless quality – and ironically, nearly 20 years on from its release, it sounds more current than ever.
